Hip muscles and tissues are carefully moved aside to access the joint

The acetabulum (hip socket) is prepared and a cup-shaped implant is secured
The femur is prepared and a metal stem is inserted into the bone
A ceramic or metal ball is attached to the stem
The new ball and socket are fitted together, tested for stability and range of motion
